Quinoa Berry Breakfast

So I decided to mix it up a bit and go with one of my own simple recipes this time to mix it up a bit. Plus its pretty and the blog readers lover that.

I wanted to talk about my fave breakfast for work days as it is one of my staples and I always think it looks pretty. I admit the presentation isn’t normally as good as this when I am up before 6 for a 12-13hr shift. The ingredients are the same though.

I use quinoa as the base for my breakfast. Packed with amino acids and one of the best plant sources of essential amino acids you can find so it’s a great little grain. I cook a batch of it normally and use some of it for different meals

So I feel I should start with saying I use artificial sweetener in this, but you can use whatever you like, sugar, honey, maple syrup, etc. I can hear the “clean eating” nazis going crazy at this point. As someone who spends their day looking after the health of the nation using evidence based medical advice here is some science for you about the sweeteners and some of the misconceptions.

And this is a good USA government view on it http://www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/causes-prevention/risk/diet/artificial-sweeteners-fact-sheet

I am also aware of the body of evidence that artificial sweeteners don’t aid weight loss. However having read the papers I still think personally the jury is out. There are various possible causes of confounding and it needs further research. I am not going to comment any more on the subject as this isn’t a medical/health science blog. But just wanted to put my reasons out there. If you are interested in human health science and nutrition and evidence based facts rather than something a celebrity is flogging as “more healthy” to make some money then I cannot recommend the Facebook group “healthy skepticism” enough. They are very friendly and will even search for the answers for you if you ask them a question.  Remember just because something is man-made doesn’t make it evil and just because something is natural doesn’t make it good for you or more nutritious. Rant over.

Defrosted frozen fruit

Method
So, it is a really simple recipe:-

Mix the cocoa and a couple of teaspoons of sweetener with the quinoa.

Blend up the frozen fruit and mix with the yogurt. Add a little more sweetener here if it’s not sweet enough for your taste with the fruit.

Top with the strawberries (ok in the pics I used them to line the jar).

Done! Quick to make and quick to eat. Yum!

Let me know what you think.
